About the therapeutic game master program
Education Grounded in Evidence, Ethics, and Applied Practice
The Therapeutic Game Master (TGM) Certification Programâ„¢ at Geek Therapeutics prepares clinicians, educators, professional facilitators, and other qualified practitioners to use tabletop role-playing games with greater intentionality, ethical awareness, and professional competence. Grounded in an current and emerging evidence-based practices, the program approaches TTRPGs not simply as recreational activities, but as structured environments in which participants may engage in communication, identity exploration, collaborative problem-solving, perspective-taking, emotional regulation, behavioral rehearsal, and meaningful decision-making. At the same time, the program recognizes that therapeutic gaming remains a developing area of empirical study and for this reason, TGM training emphasizes evidence-informed practice, critical evaluation of the literature, scope of practice, informed consent, cultural responsiveness, accessibility, documentation, and participant safety.
The program is built on the premise that effective therapeutic game mastering requires more than knowledge of rules or storytelling. Facilitators must understand the people at the table, the dynamics of the group, the purpose of the intervention, and the clinical or developmental significance of the choices being created through play. Across nine weeks and 56 hours of professional training, participants engage in didactic instruction and 18 hours of structured TTRPG live application experience. Training addresses therapeutic encounter design, group process, ethical facilitation, clinical documentation, consent and safety practices, virtual and in-person implementation, inclusive practice, and the integration of evidence-based psychological concepts into gameplay.
Rather than teaching professionals to simply add therapeutic language to an existing game, the TGM model focuses on designing experiences in which narrative, mechanics, character, relationships, and player agency function together as opportunities for growth, reflection, skill development, and behavioral change. The result is a competency-based approach to therapeutic roleplayig that brings together psychological science, clinical practice, education, game design, and professional facilitation. The goal is not merely to run a better game. It is to develop practitioners who can build intentional, responsive, ethically grounded spaces in which play becomes a meaningful context for learning, connection, and therapeutic change.
